Media relations bungle of the week goes to South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier. So Steve Spurrier walked out of a football game. A press conference the other day after a game says, I don't need to take questions. He ended a 42 second press conference that way. In the process, he looks childish, churlish, thin skinned. And now he's getting tons of media attention all over the country for being a textbook example of how not to handle the media. The idea that someone who's on the public payroll shouldn't have to answer questions is absurd. When this certain someone who makes more money than anybody else in the state of South Carolina on the public payroll, it's downright obscene. Now, Steve Spurrier is an excellent football coach. There's no doubt about it. He's had, other than his professional career in the NFL, he's had an extraordinary college coaching career and has been able to win at some places where no one thought anybody could win. But this is amateur hour. It's petty, it's frankly pathetic. Part of the job of a coach is to answer questions to the media and you owe it. In part, in this case, it's a public school with public tax dollars being used to pay for him, in part because all the other money is coming from sponsors, TV sponsors, major corporations that deal with the public. They expect someone who's going to comport himself with some standard of decency and appropriateness and dignity. And to be that churlish, to be that snippy of just I don't have to answer. To act like you're the king is really not admirable at all. Steve Spurger, you are the media media relations dunce of the week. Clean your act up.
