So maybe the music industry and MTV aren't dying as quickly as we thought. In the news, the Video Music Awards generated the highest ratings ever this week for MTV. More than 12 million people watch. What does this really mean? We've been hearing for years the whole music industry is dying. It's decaying. No one cares. No one's buying anything. What? Well, I think what we're seeing is the music industry is finally embracing change. Justin Bieber, who is an Internet creation, is the star of the show, essentially. And what the Video Music Industry Awards is doing is they're bringing people out who are interesting and creative. Lady Gaga, whether you love her, hate her, she is always provocative. They brought in big names, big entertainment, and I think they're getting a lot better job of promoting everything they do through social media, through YouTube, through every kind of social media platform. They've embraced the digital world and that's why you're seeing a lot of people in the music industry making money. It is true. You can't just do a demo, get a record deal and get millions anymore. You've got to work your way up. You've got to build your own audience. But those who do like the Lady Gaga's, like the Justin Bieber's, they are minting money. I'm T.J. walker for the Daily National.
