Is repeating yourself during a media interview a speech a big problem? Is it going to be difficult for the audience or annoying if you say the same thing more than once? What did I just do there? I repeated myself. But a minute from now, would you remember that? Here's the big situation I find with audiences around the world. When they find a speaker or someone in the media who's boring or not interesting, it's rarely because the person repeated interesting messages. That's not the problem. The hard part is getting people to remember anything. If they can't remember your messages, they're not going to remember that you repeated yourself either. I do stress when people are in media interviews to come back to their central messages again and again and again to increase the odds that it gets in the story and people remember. It feels awkward to do this, but it's the most effective way, provided you have interesting quotes and sound bites, of getting your message in the story. So I believe most speakers shouldn't worry about repeating themselves too much. Their real focus should be on not trying to put too many ideas out there and putting more of a focus on just a handful of ideas, making them memorable by giving stories, by giving examples, case studies, sometimes images, and sometimes by repeating themselves.
