TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

Excerpt from a TJ Walker live stream on personal development offering practical advice for public speaking: begin by defining the desired outcome of your speech (what you want the audience to do), and avoid overloading presentations with every fact you know; prepare strategically once the outcome is clear.

What do you actually want to accomplish with this speech or presentation you're about to give? Sounds like a simple question. Sounds like something that you heard me discover from a Stephen Covey book. And yeah, it is talked about by Stephen Covey. In fact, all motivational experts talk about that. When it comes to your goals in life, have the outcome in mind first. Well, the same thing applies to public speaking. What is the actual outcome? Meaning what do you want your audience to do? If you're a politician running for office, you want either their vote or you want their money, or both. If you are a new business person, an entrepreneur seeking venture capital, you want someone to write you a check or at least ask for a a follow up meeting. Too often people go into presentations with no idea of what they actually want their audience to do. They have sort of this general sense of, okay, I have to give a presentation on X topic and I'm going to tell everybody everything I know of what we've done in the last six months so nobody thinks I'm stupid. And once you consciously or subconsciously have that as your mindset, it sends you down a path to start digging and digging for more data, more information, more facts, more bullet points, more PowerPoint slides, and before you know it, you just have an assembly line data dump. Nothing's accomplished. Stop it. Stop it right now before you even start it. So step one for any presentation, ask yourself. In fact, it's a good idea to even write it down. What is it you want your audience to do? Until you've answered that question, you really can't prepare anything else in a thoughtful or strategic manner.
