TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker breaks down why Nevada assemblywoman Michelle Fiore's viral call for castrating pimps got so much media attention. A single vivid sound bite, he argues, can permanently define a politician's public image and overshadow everything else they do. He warns public figures that memorable phrases can lock in a reputation for life.

Sound bite of the week goes to a Nevada lawmaker who calls for castration. So this story caught my eye and the eyes of a lot of editors and observers all over the world. Michelle Fiore is a state assembly woman from the good state of Nevada, and here's what she said recently. If you really want to get serious about stopping the pimps and stopping the horrific activity, come to us legislators with a bill for chemical castration or straight up castration. Well, boom. Headlines everywhere, national media, international media. So in the one sense, it's a perfect sound bite, but on the other hand, it's almost too good of a sound bite. Here's the problem. Anytime you talk about castrating people, offenders, and you're an elected official, it's big news, it's vivid, it's dramatic. I mean, you're talking about dismembering a human being and having the government do it. It's visual, it's painful, it's emotional. Some people are vehemently for it. Some people think it's wildly inhumane and cruel. Here's the problem for this particular legislator, and here's my prediction as well. She can be in the state House for the next 30 years. The only thing she's ever going to be referred to is as that castration lady. Sometimes you have sound bites that are so good in the sense that they're so powerful, so memorable, they obliterate your ability to communicate anything else in your public career. And that's why, especially with elected officials, you have to be extraordinarily careful about the issues you choose and how you choose to communicate. Now, it may be this is the issue she cares about more than anything else. It certainly doesn't sound like it. She doesn't have legislation. It sounds like an off the head, off the top of her head comment. And now this is going to chase her around the rest of her career. So that's the power of a sound bite, ladies and gentlemen. For good or for bad. There's no such thing as a good or bad sound bite. It's good or bad only if it's what you want. I have a hard time imagining that this is really the most important issue she wants to spotlight in her entire career. So be careful, folks. You talk about dismembering human bodies, it's going to be re quoted, it's going to remember it, and it's going to get you attention, but not necessarily the sort of attention you're going to want to define your entire career.
