One of the most famous Hollywood directors, writers, producers, stars of the last 60 years is famous for saying 80% of life is just showing up. Now, I'm not going to mention to you his name because there is controversy surrounding him in his personal life these days, and I don't want to confuse people and make them think I'm endorsing him. But this basic principle, just show up. I don't think that's all it takes to succeed, but I do think it's a huge part of succeeding, especially with communication. I see so many people who start newsletters and they stop after two issues. They create a new speech, they give it twice, they move on to something else. A lot of success in life as a communicator is simply doing it on a consistent basis, regular basis, week in and week out. Perhaps at least season in, season out, sometimes on holidays. Now I am recording this July 1, 2019. This is a holiday week. A lot of my friends and colleagues are at the beach right now or at the pool. And truth be told, I'm going to take some nice vacation time this week too. But I still wanted to reach out to you because I don't like for there to be a week that goes by without you hearing from me, getting more information, more tips. Here's what I found in my own business, my own personal development, public speaking, media training. Business is Consistency really counts. I routinely get calls, emails from people wishing to hire me, and I'd look back at my notes. Turned out they went on my newsletter list 15 years ago. It was a 15 year lag period. Or maybe they used me and I was a client of theirs 17 years ago. They've been continuing to receive updates from me and now they call me again. If I hadn't communicated regularly, they wouldn't have here's the significance of the holidays is quite often you have less competition. Someone's bored, they get some free time, they woke up earlier or they stayed up later than other family members. They have nothing to do. They they can consume your content, whether it's a video speech, a podcast, an audio download. So it's a great opportunity to stay in front of people. I can still remember David Bowie and Bing Crosby coming in my living room in the early 1970s singing Christmas songs. That Christmas special, which they probably filmed in July, became a staple of holiday music. Someone like Mariah Carey has made so many people happy, and she's made a lot of money from her Christmas album. It's a way of staying in front of people in a way that isn't normally what they associate with them. So you might not want to send out a new video this week. But think of what you can do, whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, other periods of significance to you people in your culture and your country, holiday times when you can sometimes make a stronger impression because there's less competition. The other thing is, at some level, the sheer repetition, as long as you're giving people useful content can be really helpful for building your brand. Yeah, there's all these online courses and workshops and books and some seminars. Build your brand. Build your brand like it's as simple as just getting a logo made on Fiverr. Like it's a matter of coming up with a nice little catchphrase. That's not a brand. A brand is a consistent experience that you deliver. Now, I'm not a big fan of McDonald's, but if you go into any McDonald's around the world, you get a consistency of experience. The aesthetics, taste, the fries. Same with Starbucks. If you really want to build your brand, that's what you need to do, too. And these days you have to consistently communicate your brand. And if you don't have billions of dollars for advertising, then speaking on video in person is the best way to do it. I have a brand, and it's not because I spend much money on advertising or logos or graphics. It's because I'm consistently giving people useful information, tips, guidance on how to communicate more effectively and how to be more productive in all aspects of their professional and sometimes personal life. So I'd ask you to think about that. Thanks for spending a moment or two with me. As always, if you have questions you want me to address in these weekly newsletter videos, let me know. You can post it below. You can also email me. By the way, check out I do have one new course I'm incredibly excited about. It's had kind of the fastest launch of any course I've ever done on personal development and personal transformation. So it's going beyond just public speaking tips, which you might associate me with. So take a look at the link below on this page on YouTube and you can, perhaps, if you're lucky and the time has not expired, still get a free pass into that online course on personal productivity and personal development.
