So how should you judge a speaker? I'm often asked who I think are the best speakers in the world. People share with me, oh, this person's a great speaker, this person isn't. How should you really judge a speaker? Of course there are obvious things that will make someone stand out as ineffective or boring. If someone's reading a paper, head down, mumbling blah blah blah blah, it almost doesn't matter what their content is. It just strikes most people as a horrible speaker. But there are plenty of people who can give you good eye contact, walk around the stage, tell a story. Does that mean they're necessarily a good speaker or a great speaker? I'd like you to hold people to a higher standard. And the standard is this beyond the superficial things of are they not boring? How do they actually make you feel? And how, how do they potentially help improve your life? What messages are you retaining that you want to act on? If someone is just a comedian, hey, that's a great skill. And if they made me laugh for a night, that's great. That's how I judge them. But in the business world, political world, civic world, it's got to be, how does this person have an impact on me?
