A segment from a TJ Walker live-stream (The Habit Influencer) in which the instructor assigns a communication-class exercise: students should practice describing something they must say at work, record short videos (even 20 seconds), review and refine them, then post the video (public, unlisted, or private) on platforms like YouTube or Facebook and share the link in the course discussion for peer and instructor feedback. The speaker emphasizes iteration, avoiding reading scripts, and that most students historically do not complete this task.

I've been pretty easy on you so far. I haven't asked you to do a lot of homework. I haven't asked you to take a lot of tests. That's by design. Because I'm building up for something right now. I am going to ask you to do something. Unfortunately, I already know most of you won't do it, because this is something I ask in all of my communication classes. Less than 1% of my students do it. It's not hard, it's not physically demanding, it's not time consuming, and it costs nothing. What I'm going to ask you to do is to practice saying something that you have to talk about in your workplace. Record it on video, as we talked about before. Keep doing it, keep refining it, keep looking at it. Figure out what you like, what you don't like. Then once you've come up with one that you think represents you at your best, the best you can do, put it on YouTube, Facebook, somewhere. You can put it on a private or unlisted setting and then post the link in the discussion section right here. I promise you I'll look at it. I'll give you feedback on your body language. I can tell you right now, if you are reading a script, it's going to be obvious to everyone and that puts people to sleep and makes you seem robotic and canned. But I'm going to look at your video. I'm going to give you my honest feedback. Now, in order to help you the most and to save time for everyone, don't just do it once and put it up there. You have a lifetime of experience of looking at bad, awkward, nervous people in school, in business, in the work world. You already know what you don't like, what gives you sort of an un. Unhappy feeling, uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach. So if you see that, change it, keep doing it. And these can be short. These could be 20 seconds long if you want. But then post it and I'll take a look, critique it. Your fellow students will take a look and critique it. We're all in this together. No one's interested in making fun of you because everyone's worried about their own stuff, their own issues, okay? So don't use that as an excuse. I'll really appreciate it if you do. If you don't, I'll still love you. But I won't feel as satisfied that I've really helped you if you don't post your video.
