TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker explains how to test if your PowerPoint slides actually work: rehearse your full presentation for two people like your target audience, then ask which slides they remember and what message stuck. Keep the ones that land their intended point. Delete the ones that just get vague praise like "professional."

Okay, I have my theories about PowerPoint slides. You've perhaps read or heard other PowerPoint gurus pontificate on their theories. At some point, you need to disregard everything we say and test on your audience. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what I think. It doesn't matter what the theory is of various PowerPoint gurus. All that really matters is what works on your audience. So here's my recommendation. If you have to give a big PowerPoint presentation to 30 colleagues or 30 clients on Thursday, find two colleagues or two people who have a similar mindset to your clients. On Tuesday at lunch, give them your PowerPoint presentation. When you are done, ask them every slide they remember and what message they take away from that slide. Any slide they remember, and they remember the message associated with it. Great. Congratulations. That's wonderful. You now have empirical evidence that that slide works. Keep it, use it. Let that build your confidence. However, if at the end of your presentation, you ask people what slide they remember, and they just say, well, you know, T.J. your whole presentation was just really professional and smooth. And you obviously know what you're talking. Everything was great. Good job. I'm sure you'll do well Thursday. If that's what somebody tells me, then I know my PowerPoint presentation was a complete, utter failure. I need to take every one of those slides, tear them up, throw them in the trash can, hit delete. They don't work. You and I can debate all day long on what works and what doesn't work. But what you can't debate is the real world. Your audience. If people see you speak and they don't remember your slides, your slides are worthless garbage. Throw them in the trash can now.
