I was in Washington, D.C. a couple of days ago conducting a presentation training, and one of the trainees, Bill, said to me, tj, what's the biggest problem most people have with their stories? How come so many stories don't work? I said, bill, it's because people strip out the dialogue. They just summarize. And he said, ah, okay, that makes sense. So what did I just do there? I told a story and I brought in dialogue. The problem most, and it's not a brilliant story, but it just breaks up the flow. The way most people tell a story is something like this. I was in Washington earlier this week, and a trainee asked me what the biggest problem was with most stories. And I informed him the problem was people don't bring in dialogue. See the difference? That last one is straightforward. It's abstract, it's boring, it's almost monotone. The first way brings in some texture. You can see it more, slows it down. So when you're telling a story, it's important. Don't summarize what people said to you. Don't summarize what you said back. Don't be the narrator from above looking down. Just relive the actual conversations, and you'll come across much more interesting and memorable. I'm TJ Walker. I help people speak their best.
