I'll admit it, public speaking scared me till the end. I was never really comfortable as a public speaker. Sure, people who saw me out in the audience thought I was great and natural and charismatic, but inside, I was still scared. In fact, I tried to keep my hands below the line of sight of the audience because my hands would shake. Sometimes my knees would shake. I would even have staff members who were standing behind me come up to me afterwards and say, hey, Mr. President, everything okay? Looked a little shaky there, little embarrassing, but I didn't have to show it to the rest of the world. They didn't see it. As far as they knew, I was the charismatic young president who was great at public speaking. My name is John F. Kennedy. Folks, many people just don't realize that Kennedy was not some sort of natural speaker. He was a nervous speaker. In fact, people who did stand behind him when he spoke said they could visibly see his hands shaking and sometimes his knees shaking. He was not comfortable, but he learned to overcome it. And he learned at a relatively late stage of life. Now, he was still a young man when he was killed in his 40s, but as a member of Congress, as a congressman, a Senator his late 30s, still, he was not seen as a good speaker. He improved. He practiced. He got feedback. He used professional speechwriters. He got better and better until the point where he was perceived as one of the greatest speakers of the 20th century. He did know that even though he felt scared, he could convince the audience that he wasn't. And that's the mentality you need, too. It's okay to be scared, but the look on your face, your tone of voice, your smile needs to convey you're happy to be here and you're confident everything is going well.
