TJ Walker defends Al Gore against conservative pundits who misrepresent his climate change comments. Gore compared awkward modern conversations about climate to mid-20th-century race discussions, but has been repeatedly misquoted, including the false claim he invented the Internet.

Chapters

Well, Al Gore is in hot water once again. What he said was that people who doubt climate change are similar to racist in the 20th century in terms of how awkward the conversations are. What Al Gore did not say the other day was that if you doubt climate change, you are a racist. Now, of course, all the conservative punditocracy will simply lie and say that Al Gore said anyone who doubts climate change is a racist. If you actually look at what Al Gore said, he said that the conversations people are having now with their parents, grandparents, about climate change are becoming as awkward as Those in the 60s and 70s having conversations with their parents who use the N word. He said it's similar and awkwardness and he's absolutely 100. Now that's not going to stop the conservative punditocracy from attacking him and simply lying about his record. Al Gore, he may have his flaws, but I'll tell you one thing about him. He is the most lied about politician of the last decade. For example, did you know that Al Gore never said, quote, I invented the Internet? You know where that quote came from? A Republican Party press release. It is true that Al Gore once said, I took the initiative in inventing the Internet. And he was talking about all the legislation funding that he did in fact take the initiative that helped fund the Internet. It's 100% true. Did you know, for example, that Al Gore never said that quote, I was the inspiration of the lead character in Love Story never actually said it. What he said was he read in a newspaper story that the author, Eric Siegel, claimed that Al Gore was the inspiration. There was in fact a news article that said that. It was a misquote. Siegel never said it. But the person screwing up wasn't Al Gore. It was that newspaper reporter. Again, if you look at what Al Gore actually says, it was a 100% true. So, Al Gore, you're a big boy. I know you're used to this. Get ready for the smear machine to go full throttle. I'm TJ Walker for the Daily National.
