Welcome to Media Training Insider and the Daily National. This is Mike Baco. We're covering tonight's South Carolina Fox News Republican debate and who came out on top? Well, today, after many debate appearances that were less than up to his normal standards, Newt Gingrich gets our a winner of the debate. He came out and he really came out with red meat, obviously running behind Rami in a lot of the polls and certainly not faring well of late. But this debate he really came out and made his mark, made his points, so much so that he received a standing ovation at one point. Mitt Romney, another solid performance, a little bit below his usual standards. But Romney really stuck to the party line, stuck to his talking points a little bit too much. He came across obviously very rehearsed. Mitt Romney is a very good public speaker, so that's what he's going to be known for. But too often he took too long coming up with his answers, almost as if he was trying to find the right way not to offend anyone. There were certain instances certainly when Rick Santorum went right after him about whether felons should be allowed to vote, he gave a wishy washy answer. You could obviously tell that he was trying to bide his time to come up with the answer that he felt would play best with the crowd and with his followers. So obviously we have Newt Gingrich coming in number one. Another solid, steady performance by Mitt Romney. Wouldn't expect anything less. Another surprise this debate. Rick Perry, Perry laying low in the last few debates. Certainly he's had his moments, his bad moments during some of these debates. But this time he really came out with coherent thoughts, coherent concepts. He was very strong on some of his foreign policy thoughts, certainly a little bit abstract when it came to cutting regulation. He didn't go into too much specifics but about which regulations, which laws, things like that he would cut. But again, he set the bar so low for himself that the standard is not very high for Rick Perry. So coming out of this debate, I think the three keys that the media will be focusing on, who you should be focusing on are Newt Gingrich re entering into the field in terms of making his thoughts, his comments known. Mitt Romney certainly in the frontrunner status. I don't think he did anything to dissuade people from voting for him in South Carolina and a surprising performance by Rick Perry.
