TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker explains how Ronald Reagan prepared for speeches: he made writers finish a week early, read scripts aloud for hours every night, rehearsed on video for a full day, and used a teleprompter. Effective communication comes from discipline and practice, not talent.

When I was president, I had a reputation of being an excellent communicator. People thought I was a natural at it, and they also thought it was because of my previous profession. Here's the reality. When I had a major speech like the State of the Union address, I would force my speechwriters to finish a week early. I would take the script. I would read it out loud for three hours a night. In the residency of the White House. I did all this not to memorize it. I was still going to use a teleprompter. I did it to build a comfort with the words, to build a relationship with the words, to get to the point that when I'm reading from the teleprompter, it didn't sound like I'm reading from the teleprompter. Even that wasn't enough. I would still spend typically a full day of rehearsal on video camera, reviewing the tapes again and again for a full day before the speech. That way, when I gave the State of the Union address, people said, wow, what a great communicator. My name is Ronald Reagan. That's right, folks. I think this is one of the great lessons from. From history, from leaders, this idea that someone is a natural and can just wing it. No, it comes from practice. Ronald Reagan's strength as a communicator was not that it was just easy because he was an actor. The strength came because he had the discipline of rehearsal. All great actors, and even so. So actors know they have to practice. They have to rehearse again and again and again to get their lines right. So it was the discipline of rehearsal. And this is important because not many people can just hope to be born great or be born in natural. But everybody can have some discipline and everybody can practice.
