What ideas do you want another person to understand, and what do you want them to do with it after they understand your ideas? That's the essence of communication. Anytime you're trying to communicate with a speech, in a job interview, any type of presentation, you need to start off by stepping back a moment and asking yourself what ideas are that are truly important to you? Do you need this audience member? Whether it's a thousand, ten thousand, or just one person? What do you need them to really understand and to remember so that they do what you want them to do, or agree with you, or take part in some action you're interested in? That is the starting point of communication.
