TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker discusses whether being an exceptionally good speaker can negatively affect one’s career. He acknowledges rare cases (jealous coworkers, punitive leaders, an academic-tenure anecdote) but argues that generally stronger speaking skills advance careers; he concludes with a brief self-introduction and promotional calls-to-action for his training courses and workshops.

Can being too good of a speaker actually harm your career? This is a question I get every several months from someone in the world. Believe it or not, the first time I heard it, I thought it was a strange question. But I reflected on it more and the answer is, well, of course you could. In the same way that if you show up 10 minutes early for work every day, you could alienate someone who feels like you're trying to make them look bad and they try to conspire to get you fired. I mean, you could always be fired. Or someone try to stop you from getting a promotion because they feel jealous, because they feel threatened, and they see you as doing a much better job. But is the result to just make yourself worse or make yourself mediocre? I firmly believe that for most people, most of the time, that the better off you speak, the stronger your speaking skills, the further you advance in your career. Now, it's not 100%. You could have other flaws in your skill set. You could have a CEO who's a horrible speaker and just wants to get rid of all rivals. And anyone who's seen as a good speaker is pushed aside. Certainly there have been cases. I remember when I was in college once a teacher, an associate professor who hasn't been tenured yet, got a reputation of being a great lecturer. It just seemed the joke was that was the kiss of death. They couldn't get tenured because they weren't seen as serious researcher. You almost needed to be perceived as a horrible speaker because you spent all your time doing research. So I won't say it's impossible. But let me ask you, do you want to be in an organization that rewards mediocrity and punishes doing things effectively? I would hope not. All things being equal, you're better off being as an effective speaker as you possibly can. I'm T.J. walker. I help people speak more effectively. If you'd like to improve, give me a call.
