Trump DOJ Targets Gavin Newsom? The Investigation Raising Dictatorship Alarms

In this episode of the Filtered show, host TJ Walker examines recent reports that federal agents have contacted friends, former employees, and associates of California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as part of a Justice Department investigation. Walker outlines the known facts—no official comment from the DOJ or FBI, a source indicating multiple investigations, and Newsom’s claim that the probe is a politically motivated effort by Donald Trump to intimidate a potential 2028 rival. Walker then situates the Newsom case within a broader pattern he argues is emerging under Trump: former FBI Director James Comey, Senator Adam Schiff, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Senator Mark Kelly have all faced federal scrutiny. He argues that these investigations function as a tool of authoritarian control, using subpoenas and media headlines to silence opponents, create financial and reputational burdens, and reshape political calculations. Walker speculates that Trump, who has expressed regret at leaving office, may be planning a 2028 succession strategy involving Donald Trump Jr., who remains eligible for the presidency. The host criticizes mainstream media and Democratic leaders for treating the story as a routine legal matter rather than a democratic threat, urging them to frame it as a pattern of political weaponization of the Justice Department. The episode concludes with a promotional plug for Walker’s Ultimize online courses, encouraging listeners to improve communication and habit‑building skills.

Ultimize. Gavin Newsom says Donald Trump's Justice Department is investigating him, his wife, and people around him. That is the news. Federal agents have questioned friends, former employees, and associates of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Newsom says Trump is using the Justice Department to punish a political enemy and intimidate a potential 2028 rival. The full scope of the investigation is still unclear. The Justice Department and FBI are not commenting. A source familiar with the matter says multiple investigations exist but denies they were politically ordered from Washington. Fine, include that caveat, but don't miss the larger reality. Trump has already said he shouldn't have left office after 2020. He's joked about leaving in 8 or 9 years. The safest assumption is that Trump will not respect democracy. The safest assumption is that he's already planning not to leave. Okay, let's slow down and establish exactly what happened here, because this is a news analysis show, and most people have not heard the basic facts yet. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, announced in a video that Trump's Justice Department is investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. According to the reporting, federal agents have contacted people connected to the couple. That includes friends, former employees of the governor, and people affiliated with nonprofit groups connected to his wife. Now, Newsom says this is not normal law enforcement. He says this is Donald Trump using the federal government to go after a political opponent. Now, to be precise, we don't know yet the full scope of the investigation. We don't know exactly what prosecutors or agents are looking for. A person familiar with the matter told the Times, the New York Times, there are multiple federal investigations related to Newsom, including one looking at his wife's finances. But the person disputed Newsom's claim that this was directed from Washington for political reasons. Okay, yeah, right, just a coincidence. The FBI declined to comment. The Justice Department declined to comment. The White House referred questions to the Justice Department. Nice how that sort of goes around in a ring. Those are the known facts. Now, here's the analysis. If Gavin Newsom is right, this is not just another Trump controversy. This is not just another California story. This is not just Newsom versus Trump, two ambitious politicians yelling at each other on social media. This is a warning flare for American democracy because Donald Trump is not hiding what he wants. Uh-huh. He's not hiding his contempt for political opposition. He's not hiding his admiration for authoritarian strongmen. He's praised Putin. He's praised Xi. He's admired the way strongmen get things done. He looks at leaders who can harass, jail, crush, bankrupt, or destroy their political opponents, and he doesn't recoil from that system. He seems to envy it. And why wouldn't an authoritarian envy that? It's much easier to stay in power if your strongest opponents are under investigation or in prison, or worse. It's much easier to win elections if your rivals are spending half their campaign money on lawyers or bail money. It's much easier to dominate the news if every Democrat who might beat you is suddenly associated with the words federal probe. It's much easier to keep control if everyone in politics learns the same lesson: oppose Trump and the government may come knocking, or will come knocking. That's the story. Not paperwork, not process, not both sides trade accusations. The story is whether the President of the United States is turning the Department of Justice into a political weapon, and this fits a pattern. Former FBI Director James Comey has been targeted. U.S. Senator Adam Schiff has been targeted. Letitia James has been targeted. Mark Kelly has been singled out and threatened. Now Gavin Newsom says he and his wife are being targeted. At a certain point, when every person under scrutiny happens to be a Trump critic, a Trump prosecutor, a Trump investigator, a Trump political opponent, or a potential Trump rival, we're allowed to notice the pattern. If one piano falls out of a window, maybe it's an accident. If a piano falls out of a window every single time one of Trump's enemies walks by, maybe stop calling it weather and look upstairs for the guy with the rope. And the media keeps underestimating the story, because the mainstream media is still addicted to the fantasy that American politics is normal. Normal. They want to say, "Newsom claims Trump is targeting him." No, the better frame is, "A Justice Department run by Trump loyalists is investigating a potential 2028 Democratic rival and his wife amid a broader pattern of federal action against Trump's perceived enemies." Now, that's not bias, that's context, that's accuracy. Context is not the opposite of journalism. Context is journalism. Mm-hmm. And the Democratic establishment is also not treating this with the urgency it deserves. Too many Democrats are still acting as if we're heading into normal elections in 2026 and 2028. Normal campaigns, normal polls, normal debates, normal fundraising, normal concession speeches, normal peaceful transfer of power. Well, what country have these people been watching? Where have they been living? Donald Trump already tried to overturn an election. Donald Trump already refused to accept defeat. Donald Trump already inspired a mob that attacked the Capitol. Donald Trump already spent years lying that the 2020 election was stolen. And just before the 2024 election, Trump said he couldn't have left the White House. It was his only regret from his first term. That may be one of the most important sentences and most truthful sentences Trump ever said. Yeah, Trump lies constantly. He lies about crowd size. He lies about elections. He lies about wars. He lies about his wealth. He lies about his golf scores. He lies about things that don't even help him. He would lie about the number of clouds in the sky while everyone is standing outside in the rain. But when Trump says he regrets leaving office, I believe him. That's probably the honest part. When a man who tried to cling to power says, "I shouldn't have left," the sane reaction is not, "Oh, I'm sure he respects constitutional term limits now." The sane reaction is, this man is telling us his plan. And yes, under the normal constitutional rules, Trump is not eligible to run again in 2028. I understand that. The 22nd Amendment is real. Two terms is supposed to mean two terms. But since when has Donald Trump cared about normal rules? Since when has Donald Trump treated legal barriers as anything more than something to attack, delay, corrupt, reinterpret, or dare someone else to enforce? And even if Trump doesn't personally run, he can try to keep power through a stand-in, Donald Trump Jr. Okay, I know, sounds ridiculous, but Donald Trump Jr. is over 35. Donald Trump Jr. has not served two terms. Donald Trump Jr. is legally eligible to run. I've said before, and I continue to believe this is a real possibility. Trump could attempt to turn 2028 into a family succession plan. Junior's name is on the ballot. Donald Senior as the regime leader behind the throne. People will say it sounds crazy. I hope it is. I hope I'm wrong. But everything Trump does sounds crazy until he does it. It sounded crazy that he would try to overturn an election. Sounded crazy that he would pressure state officials to find votes. Sounded crazy that his supporters would storm the Capitol and that Capitol Police officers would end up dead. It sounded crazy that a president facing felony charges would return to power and then moved to turn law enforcement against his enemies. And yet here we are. The mistake the media and Democrats keep making is assuming Trump will be constrained by norms or even the Constitution. He won't be. Trump is constrained only by what he can get away with. That's why the Newsom story matters so much, because this is a test. Can Trump's Justice Department investigate a leading potential 2028 rival and his wife while the media treats it as a legal process story? Can federal agents knock on the doors of friends and associates of a political opponent while the public just shrugs? Can candidates in 2026 look at this and quietly decide, maybe I should not criticize Trump too much, maybe I shouldn't run that ad, maybe I shouldn't call out corruption, maybe I don't want the FBI talking to my relatives. Mm-hmm. That, my friends, is how authoritarianism works. It doesn't always start with tanks in the street. It often starts with subpoenas, starts with big legal bills. It starts with agents just asking questions. It starts with donors getting very nervous. It starts with headlines that say "under investigation," even when there's no public evidence of wrongdoing. It starts with the unspoken message: Oppose the leader and your life will become unlivable. Would you like to be the sort of successful person who is dominating news, at least in your industry? I fully anticipate that in October 2026, if there are close House and Senate races— there should be— some Democratic candidates may suddenly discover they are under investigation. Maybe they'll be indicted. Maybe they will not be arrested live on television, although they might, but the damage will not require a conviction. The headline is the weapon. Federal investigation next to your name is enough. It raises doubts. It scares donors. It gives right-wing media weeks of content. It lets lazy mainstream media outlets say, clouds hang over the Democratic candidate, and the election can be tilted before any judge ever sees any evidence. Mm-hmm. That's the playbook. You don't need to prove the person guilty before Election Day. You just need the cloud. You just need the smoke. You just need the media to keep repeating the smoke while forgetting to ask who keeps lighting the fires. And that's why this has to be said clearly. If news organizations report these investigations without aggressively reporting the political pattern, they're not being neutral. They are becoming tools of the intimidation campaign. Do not just tell me Gavin Newsom is being investigated. Tell me who else has been targeted. Tell me what Trump has said about revenge. Tell me what he said about not leaving office. Tell me who runs the Justice Department. Tell me whether the target is a potential rival. Tell me whether this fits a broader pattern. That's the difference between covering authoritarianism and being used by authoritarianism. And no, none of this means Gavin Newsom or his wife are above the law. Nobody is above the law. If there is real evidence of a real crime, investigate it properly, independently, transparently, and without political interference. But that's not the America Trump is building. Trump is building an enemies list government. Mm-hmm. He's building a system where law enforcement protects friends and punishes enemies. He's building a system where the Justice Department becomes a political hit squad with better stationery. He's building a system where the question is not, did this person commit a crime, but did this person get in Trump's way? That is dictatorship logic, and America needs to wake up, and mainstream media needs to wake up. Thank you. The Democratic Party needs to wake up. We're in the middle of a revolution from democracy to dictatorship, and it's not happening in secret. It's happening in plain sight, one investigation at a time, one subpoena at a time, one threat at a time, one enemy at a time. This is not a one-off. This is not just Gavin Newsom drama. This is not some California sideshow. Mm-hmm. This is the president showing us what he believes federal government is for. Not justice, not public safety, not equal enforcement of the law, but power, revenge, control. And if America keeps pretending not to see it, democracy will not disappear in one dramatic moment with a general on television announcing that the Constitution has been suspended. It will disappear under official letterhead. It will disappear under search warrants. It'll disappear under sealed subpoenas. It will disappear under headlines that say, "Federal investigation," while everyone in power pretends not to know why the targets keep being Trump's enemies. Trump said he shouldn't have left office. Believe him. And then ask yourself— Why? What do you think he's doing right now to make sure he never has to leave again? I'm TJ Walker. This is Filtered. Post your comments. I'll see you tomorrow.
