TV Confidence: Unlock Natural Movement & Charisma

TJ Walker teaches how to look relaxed on camera: smile slightly, let your hands and body move naturally instead of freezing up, and avoid swiveling in your chair. He warns against overdoing gestures and frames natural movement as universal across cultures.

Smiling just a little. It will make anyone look more relaxed, more comfortable and more confident. And then the final thing is, you need to move. People think, oh, I'm going to be professional. I know I'm not supposed to move my hands wrong. I have students in every country in the world except North Korea. I've been to 50 countries training in every culture in the world. When people are speaking and they're comfortable and confident, their hands move. So the second you immobilize your hands, you freeze your hands, you freeze your arms, you freeze your neck, you freeze your voice. I'd like to tell you how to come across comfortable and relax and confident on TV today. It's not very believable, is it? You want movement now? Is it possible to overdo it? Yes. I've seen Will Ferrell and Talladega Knightsley. I don't know what to do with my hands here. It's possible to be distracting. I've never actually seen anyone do it in real life unless they're a professional comedian. So a lot of what I train people to do is, is to bring back their movement and their hands, their body. Now, you don't want to be swiveling in a chair. And for a lot of my guests, I recommend don't even have a chair. If you're doing anything on video that swivels, better to have it so that it doesn't. But if you can just lean from the waist forward and move in occasionally.
