TJ Walker argues that staying silent during a crisis backfires because people fill the void with speculation and harmful narratives. Instead, communicate early with a simple acknowledgment that you're aware and gathering facts. Silence doesn't buy time; it lets others define the story.

Ultimize. Many people still believe that saying nothing is the safest option in a crisis. It feels responsible. It feels cautious. It feels like the right thing to do while you're gathering the facts. Your lawyers might approve. In today's environment, it's also often the most dangerous thing you can do, because when you say nothing, the story doesn't pause. Oh no. It accelerates. People begin to fill in the gaps. They speculate. They assume the worst, and those assumptions spread quickly, especially if they confirm what people already want to believe. Silence is no longer neutral. Silence is interpreted. If you say nothing, many people will assume you're hiding something. If you say nothing, others will assume the worst which version of events is true. And if those interpretations take hold early, they become extremely difficult to reverse, even if your eventual statement is accurate, even if it's thoughtful, even if it's completely fair. The narrative may already be set. Now, this doesn't mean you should rush out and say something reckless or unverified. That would be just as damaging, maybe even more damaging. But it does mean you must find a way to communicate early, quickly, even if you don't yet have all the answers. A simple acknowledgment can go a long way. You can say that you're aware of the situation. You can say that you're gathering facts. You can say that you will provide updates as soon as you know more information. That kind of a statement doesn't solve the problem, but it shows that you're present. It shows that you're engaged, and it prevents others from completely defining the situation without you. It prevents others from saying, "You're out of touch. You're nowhere to be seen. You're missing in action." In the past, silence bought you time. Today, silence costs you control.
