What If You Have an Itch During a TV Interview

TJ Walker explains how to handle an itch during a live TV interview: finish your thought, then scratch when the reporter is talking. If it's being edited, pause to scratch and repeat what you said so editors have a clean take.

What do you do if you're in the middle of an interview and all of a sudden you have this irresistible itch on your face? You don't want to scratch you because it's the middle of the interview. You don't want to look distracting. On the other hand, it's hard to think about anything else other than how much you want to scratch your face. Here's my advice. Don't torture yourself. Simply finish your thought and then, while the reporter is asking you the next question, then you can scratch. Because if you're on a live interview, chances are the people at home are not seeing you, they're seeing the host. And if they do, no big deal. If it is any sort of an edited interview and you're feeling like it's disrupting your thought process, just stop, scratch, and then begin your sentence again at the beginning of your thought. That way, if they're editing the story together, they can use the whole thought without having to distracting scratching your face. Now, you shouldn't be horribly uncomfortable in an interview, but if you have one little bitty twitch or something, or you want to scratch or stretch with. Let's hold that till the end of the interview. I don't want you tortured, but you're not at home in your living room either.
