What You Discover When You Actually Measure Your Day

TJ Walker explains how to run an Attention Audit: measure how you actually spend your day instead of guessing. Most people underestimate their distractions, which cluster around specific triggers like notifications or boredom. Once you see the pattern, you can eliminate the trigger rather than rely on willpower.

Ultimize. Most people have a story about their day. They say things like, well, I was pretty focused, or yeah, I got a lot done today, or I was a little distracted. After you do the Attention Audit, that story changes because now you're not guessing, you're seeing. And what most people see is surprising, not because they didn't know they were distracted. We all know that. But because they didn't realize how consistent it was. You might think that you're switching tasks every few minutes. You might find that you're switching tasks every few minutes. You might find that certain triggers show up again and again: a notification, a moment of boredom, a difficult task, a slight pause in your work. And every time one of those moments appears, you reach for something else. Now here's where it gets interesting. You also start to see patterns in timing. Maybe mornings are better for you. Maybe afternoons are where everything breaks down. Maybe evenings are a complete loss. That's not random. That's your environment interacting with your energy. And once you see that, you can start making smarter decisions. For example, if you notice that you always get distracted when you hit a difficult part of your work, That's not a discipline issue. That's a trigger. And triggers can be designed around or removed. Another example, if you notice that your phone is responsible for most of your switching, then that's your leverage point. You don't need to fix everything. You need to fix the biggest driver. That's why measurement matters so much. Without it, you're trying to improve based on assumptions. With it, you're making changes based on facts, on reality, and reality is much easier to work with. So please don't skip this because everything that comes next depends on what you see here. This is where you move from general advice, and I realize I've been a bit general, a bit vague, a bit abstract so far, but now we go to a system that is tailored to your actual behavior.
