When AI Supports Mindfulness - And When It Destroys It

TJ Walker argues that how you use AI determines whether it sharpens or dulls your mind. Use it after you've thought through a problem yourself, and it refines your thinking. Jump straight to it for answers, and you skip the awareness that makes you present. The rule: awareness first, tool second.

Ultimize. You're at your desk again. You're working through something complicated, maybe writing, maybe planning, maybe solving a complex problem. You've been sitting with it for a few minutes. You've thought about it. You've tried a few things. Now you're still stuck. This is where AI can actually help. You open a new tab. You ask a focused question to your AI of choice. You read the answer, you adjust your thinking, you go back to your work. That's support. Now let's look at a different version of the same moment. You sit down at your desk, you haven't even started yet. Before you think, before you try, before you explore, you just immediately ask the AI to solve the whole problem for you. You get an answer, then another, then another. Now you're moving quickly, but you never really engaged with the That's not really support. That's replacement. Same tool, completely different experience. Let's go somewhere else. Back in your kitchen, you're trying to decide what to eat. You pause, you think about what you actually want, what would feel good, what would be healthy. Then you ask for ideas to refine that. That's support. Now, the other version, you walk into the kitchen, you don't think, you just ask, you get options, you pick one, you move on. No awareness, no presence. That's replacement again. So here's the distinction. AI supports mindfulness when you bring awareness first. AI destroys mindfulness when it replaces awareness. Let me repeat this. Supports when awareness comes first. Destroys when awareness is skipped. That's really the entire model. You don't need to eliminate AI tools. You do need to change the sequence that most of us use. So you're at your desk, think first, then, then you ask. You're making a decision, pause first, then refine. You're curious about something, sit with it. Let it settle, then explore. Because the tool itself is neutral. The impact depends on how you use it. And the moment you start using it before you're aware, you lose the benefit. So keep it simple. Awareness first, tool second. The AI tool comes second. That's the rule. And if you follow that, even imperfectly, you'll notice something. You stay more present. You think more clearly, and the tool actually becomes more useful because now it's supporting your awareness, not replacing it.
