Why Longer Explanations Make Things Worse

TJ Walker explains why people over-explain during crises, adding detail to avoid misunderstanding. Each extra sentence creates more chances for fragments to be taken out of context and weakens your core message. Clarity and brevity protect your words from being shortened or distorted.

Ultimize. When people feel under pressure, they tend to explain more. They add detail. They give more context. They try to make sure nothing is misunderstood. It feels like the responsible thing to do. In a modern crisis, it often makes things worse. Might not be fair. Might not seem like that's the way the world should be. But that's the way the world is. Because the more you talk, the more opportunities you create for something to be taken out of context in a way that makes you look bad. Every additional sentence increases the chance that one phrase sounds a little defensive, dismissive, or unclear. And remember, people are not watching your full explanation. They're seeing fragments. So a long explanation doesn't protect you. It exposes you. It gives editors, critics, and the public more material to work with. More lines to isolate, more moments to question, more chances for something to sound wrong when separated from everything around it. There's another problem with long explanations: they dilute your message. If you make 3 strong points and then surround them with 10 weaker ones, the weaker ones often take over. People remember what stands out, and what stands out is not always what you intended. This is why clarity and brevity matter so much more today in a crisis environment. You need to decide what your key message is, and you need to express it in a way that can survive being shortened. That doesn't mean you hide information. It means you prioritize what matters most. You say it clearly, and you stop before you create problems you did not need to create. In today's environment, more words do not give you more control. They give others more opportunity to define you.
