Why Most AI Communication Makes People Sound Less Intelligent | Ultamize

TJ Walker argues that overly polished, generic language makes people sound less intelligent, not more. Audiences now recognize AI-style symmetrical phrasing as a sign of automation rather than original thought. Real intelligence comes through specificity, concrete stories, and the natural rhythm of human speech, including pauses and imperfection.

Ultimize. One of the fastest ways to sound less intelligent these days is to sound exactly like an AI chatbot. And the problem is millions of people already do. You can hear it everywhere now. LinkedIn posts that sound like, I'm humbled and honored to announce. Emails filled with phrases like, hope this message finds you well. People suddenly talking like emotionally exhausted management consultants. Let's leverage strategic synergies moving forward. Nobody's ever said that sentence naturally in human history. And here's the problem. When communication sounds overly polished, generic, and strangely bloodless, people stop associating it with intelligence. Now, these days, they associate it with automation, meaning you didn't think of it. Maybe you're not smart enough to think of what to say. That's a huge shift. 5 years ago, polished wording might have sounded impressive to some people, although I didn't like it then either. But now it increasingly sounds suspicious because audiences are starting to think, did this person actually think this, or did they just copy and paste a prompt into AI? And this directly affects perceived intelligence. Because sounding smart isn't merely sounding polished, it's sounding like an actual human being having an original thought. That's why specificity matters so much now. Specific examples sound intelligent. Specific observations sound intelligent. Highly specific stories, unique stories to you, make you sound intelligent. Generic abstract just sounds like something you got from ChatGPT or Claude or some other chatbot. It sounds automated. For example, imagine somebody says, we need stronger communication and collaboration moving forward. That sounds like AI oatmeal. Now compare that to, wow, our meetings fail because nobody wants to disagree with the boss until the meeting ends. And everyone complains privately afterward. Now suddenly the speaker sounds insightful. Why? Specificity, observation. It sounds real, doesn't sound like what a chatbot would tell you to say. Real intelligence often sounds concrete. Another huge issue with AI-generated communication is that it removes human rhythm. Real humans pause. That's right, they pause. They emphasize things. They simplify. They joke. They repeat themselves. Yeah, sometimes they repeat themselves, and it's okay. And occasionally they speak imperfectly. That texture matters, especially in spoken communication, because sounding smart in conversation isn't the same as sounding smart in writing. And this is where many people now get themselves into trouble. They start speaking exactly like AI writes— overly polished, overly symmetrical. It's way too structured, fussly, and things like that come out. And instead of sounding brilliant, they sound fake. They sound phony. The smartest communicators of the next decade are probably going to be people who sound most human, most specific, most conversational, most observant, and they're going to sound real, not the people producing endless generic polished sludge.
