Why Online Presentations Make Even Good Speakers Sound Bad

TJ Walker explains why good speakers sound flat and robotic on Zoom: they lose the audience feedback and room energy they rely on, then panic and read from notes. The fix is intentional technique: manage your visual presence, minimize reading, and practice deliberate vocal control.

Ultimize. You've probably seen this. Someone who's actually a solid speaker in person gets on Zoom or Teams, and suddenly they sound completely different— flat, stiff, almost robotic. And you think, hey, what happened? It's not that they forgot how to speak. It's that the environment changed and they didn't adjust. In a room, you have built-in advantages. You can see people, you can move your eyes naturally, you can feel the energy, you can adjust in real time. Online, all that disappears. Now you're staring at a tiny camera, or worse, notes on your screen. You don't get any real feedback. You don't know if people are paying attention in some cases, and that creates subtle anxiety. So what do most people do? They try to control that anxiety by playing it safe, and they think that means reading more. They rely on notes. They stare at slides. They try to be safe, and that's exactly what makes them sound worse, because speaking naturally requires flow and variation, and reading destroys the flow. Unless you're a professional actor or news anchor. Even if you only read a little bit, it changes your rhythm. You hesitate in weird places, you restart sentences awkwardly, you lose that conversational feel, and the audience picks up on it immediately. Here's the key idea I want you to take away from this: online presentations are not easier. They can actually be less forgiving. In person, you can get away with a lot. Online, small mistakes become very noticeable. So if you want to sound like a pro, you don't just do what you do in a room. You become more intentional, more controlled, more aware of how you look and how you sound. And once you make that shift, you can actually become better online than most people will ever be in person.
