Why You Don’t Need to Edit Your Videos: Publish Today!

A short YouTube monologue by TJ Walker arguing that creators should publish raw talking-head videos rather than delaying for heavy editing. Walker contrasts a spectrum of production effort across media, shares that his most successful video was unedited, and issues a call-to-action: hit publish today and prioritize message and communication skills over polish.

You don't have to edit your video. I know that sounds like heresy. That's crazy talk, right? Video needs to be edited. It needs to be polished. You need to have music, graphics, B roll, different angles, different shots, lots of creativity. Well, you could, but think of it this way. Every medium has a continuum. You could write a great novel, spend seven years on it, write it, rewrite it, throw away certain chapters, start over again, hire copy editors, format it, and when it comes out in a book seven years later, it's really something, polished. It's something that's going to be good for decades. You know that with writing, but you also know that you could just send a tweet in two seconds. You could dictate one sentence in a text to someone. And that's text communication. There's a whole range, a whole continuum of how much processing you do when it comes to communicating by text. We all know that. We realize we make judgments according to how important it is, how big the audience is, and what we're trying to do. Well, for some reason, when it comes to video, a lot of people think one size fits all. They have kind of the novel as their reference point. They think, what? Well, I can't make a video for YouTube unless I have it all scripted out and music selection and different camera angles and fancy graph. Well, you could do it that way, but you don't have to. One of the tragedies of my career is I meet so many people who are genuine experts. They have a passion for their subject matter, they help people, and one on one are talking to three or four people. Their passion comes alive. They give people so many fascinating insights that help them personally, professionally. They've got these great insights and they think, wow, I want to do this on video. But their model is it's got to be like a movie or a 60 Minutes production with lots of camera angles and editing and video production and CGI and all these things. And it's overwhelming. And the bottom line is they never do it. Maybe they shoot the footage, but they tell themselves, well, wait until I learn how to edit or I gotta go raise a bunch of money to hire editors again. You could. You don't have to edit if you have a great message that's interesting to someone, that's useful to someone, and they could benefit today. If you want to be more successful, then improve your communication skills. The best way to do that, smash the subscribe button right now. My advice, hit publish today. And I've done thousands and thousands of videos on social media, online, learning platforms. My most successful video of all time is me speaking on camera. Not a single edit, no music, no B roll, no graphics, just me giving information for an hour. And it's my most successful video of all time. If I had never hit publish on that, I would have lost out on scores of prospects and clients who've come to me over the years. So that's my challenge to you. What are you losing out right now by not posting a simple talking head video of you talking about how you help people? Yes, you can always get fancier. You can always hire editors, you can do storyboards, you can get three camera shoot. You can do all of that in due course. But something beats nothing. So I'm urging you, don't spend another day thinking, oh, once I learn how to edit or once I get the special effects program, then I'll start publishing video. No, publish a video today. Take out your cell phone, pull up your webcam, hit record, talk whatever it is that you say to people, clients, customers, colleagues, day to day, over the phone or zoom or in person that they find useful and helpful. Talk right to the camera, record it, hit publish today.
