Why Your LinkedIn Bio Shouldn't Mention Your Job

TJ Walker explains why leading with your job title on LinkedIn backfires. Instead, use your bio to show who you are and what interests you. Save the pitch for your Experience section and build real connections by commenting on other people's posts.

The reason why it shouldn't be what you do. I get a lot of people coming to me and their summary title will say I teach CEOs or I help CEOs with their accounting. Now I already have an accountant, so I know that person is going to come to me and they're going to try and pitch me accountancy services. I just press ignore. I get people coming to me saying I help CEOs with their fitness. And I get again, I ignore. So if you put what you do in there, it's a massive error. One of the things that you need to do and going to your point, tj, is that this is a social network. It's about connecting to people. The bigger, the wider and the broader the network that you have, the better results that you're going to get. The important thing is, especially when you're using whatever platform is, is not to go to people and immediately spam them and say, this is my product or service. You need to understand that this is about them. For them to invest in a connection with you, you need to be interested in them. So let's just, just down here, there's one of my team here, Alex Albert. If I wanted to connect with Alex, the thing is, I need to do is, is go to him and say, I've read, maybe go, I've read your profile and I think it's really interesting. Or I've read this blog and I, and I found this thing particularly interesting. The important thing is, is that you're, you're talking about them, not yourself. Salespeople usually talk about themselves. It's not about them, it's about the clients. So that, that's really important to actually increase your, your network. The more, the bigger the network you have, the more reach you have. The other thing here is about, is your about section. This is not about your company or your products. This, this is about you. This is the first thing. If I looking down your profile, this is the thing that will stand up. What is it that you're going to say that's going to connect me? That's going to say, I understand that you're an expert, but I also understand that you are a human being yourself. So what you're doing is that you're writing in this about section. It's not about your company or products. It's about who you are, what you are, what your interests are. And then what you'll find is that there are, you will have certain company posts. So if you want to talk about your, who you are, who your company is and the products are products are you do that within your experience section and then also what you have is your activity. So here are some of the blogs. So for example, this blog, this piece of content here is the interview with TJ Walker that we've been live streaming from TJ's stream yard to my LinkedIn. Does that, does that give you a very quick overview?
TJ yes, fantastic tips because I, I'm almost ashamed of my LinkedIn page which we're not going to go there right now. But I do want to pick your brain and your expertise and to and unfairly take advantage of you because I know you normally would charge tens of thousands of dollars for this. I want a critique of a new I think social media tool I'm using. Ben, I need you to pull up my or find the link for me of our new, our new training webinar, free communication skills training webina.
