TJ Walker argues smartphones have become automatic extensions of our behavior, and proposes shifting from restriction to ownership. He outlines four habits: ask aloud what you're doing before unlocking, stand while using the phone, keep it in one place, and use it in time-boxed sessions. Repeated intentional actions build lasting control.

Ultimize. At some point, without noticing it, the relationship flipped. You bought a phone to serve you, to help you communicate, to help you navigate, to help you get things done. But somewhere along the line, it stopped being a tool and started becoming a default. You don't decide to use it, you just use it automatically. And when something becomes automatic, it starts to feel like control has shifted, like the phone is in charge. But it's not. You are. You just haven't been reminded of that lately. Action step number 1, change how you pick up your phone. Starting today, every time you pick up your phone, ask one question. What am I doing here? Not after you unlock it, before. Say it out loud if you can. I'm checking messages. I'm looking up directions. I am making a call. All perfectly good reasons for using a phone. Now, use the phone, and when the task is done, put it down immediately. This one habit alone will cut your usage dramatically because most phone use is not intentional. It is wandering. Action Step #2: Stand when you use your phone. This sounds simple, even simplistic. But it works. If you're sitting and you reach for your phone, stand up. Now use it. Why? Because standing changes the behavior. It makes it feel temporary, functional, not comfortable. Scrolling happens when you settle in, you sprawl out on that couch. Standing keeps it purposeful. Try it. You'll naturally spend less time on your phone that way. Action step number 3: Create a phone home. Your phone should have a place, not everywhere, one place, a counter, a shelf, a specific spot in a room. When you're not using it, that's where it goes. Not in your hand, not next to you, not in your pocket, not moving from place to place. When something has a home, it stops becoming a constant presence. And when it's not constantly present, you use it less. Action step number 4: use intentional sessions. Instead of checking your phone all day, use it in sessions, short defined blocks. You pick it up, you do what you need to do, you put it down. No drifting, no wandering, no "just one more thing." If something else comes up, you handle it later on purpose. Now notice what all of these have in common. You are not about restriction. You are about control. You are not saying, oh, I can't use my phone. You are saying, I decide when and how I use it. That is a completely different mindset, and your mindset matters because identity drives behavior. If you see yourself as someone who is trying to cut back, you'll struggle. If you see yourself as someone who controls their device, you act differently automatically. There are tools that try to enforce this for you— app blockers, timers, restrictions— and again, those can help, but usually on a temporary basis. They don't create ownership. They don't create an identity for you. Only you can do that. Through repetition, through reminders, through small actions like this done consistently. So here's the shift. You're not reacting anymore. You're deciding. You're not checking out of habit. You're using your phone with purpose. You're not being pulled in. You're choosing when to engage. You control the device, not the other way around. And from here forward, that becomes the standard.
