In this interview segment, Robert McKee discusses three upcoming writing projects. He has just completed a new book focused on dialogue, which is in the final editing stages and will be released in a few months. He is also co‑authoring a book with an English writer titled Action: The Art of Excitement, slated to follow shortly. Finally, McKee is working on a larger companion volume to his seminal work Story, called Character, which will explore the interplay between story and character, including dialogue, imagery, and poetic theater. Throughout, he emphasizes the limitless nature of storytelling, describing story and its components as metaphors for the boundless complexity of life, and expresses a lifelong commitment to writing about the art of story.

You are covering a massive amount of people, you've spoken, and yet it continues to inspire you.
Yeah, I just finished a new book on dialogue and just went to the editor, and I'm reworking, I'm doing the polished draft, working the edits into the next draft. And it'll be out very soon, a few months. And then there's another one coming soon after that called— that I'm co-writing with an English author. We call it Action: The Art of Excitement. And then beyond that, there's the big book I'm writing, a companion to Story called Character. And so the subject is bottomless. I mean, Story is a book, as the title says, about the nature of story design and the, you know, the range of limits and variations and depths of story. But that's story. And on the other side of the coin, are characters. And when you get the two together, they talk and there's dialogue. And when you're writing a novel or you're making a film, there's enormous imagery involved in description. And in the theater, the dialogue becomes extremely poetic. And on it goes. And so there's— if I had 10 lifetimes I could not begin to get into every single corner of every single aspect of telling story and stories, as I say in the lecture, are metaphors for life. And life is, you know, bottomless in its complexity. As I said, I'll be writing about the art of story, I'll be writing about writing. Until I'm deaf.
