ShowbizU: Relationship Between Actor & Director- Alli Mauzey & Tim Kashani

Alli Mauzey and Tim Kashani discuss what makes a strong actor-director relationship. They emphasize trust, giving actors freedom to explore their characters, and guiding performances without micromanaging the work.
You've gotten to work with a number of different personalities, amazing people. What do you hope for in the actor-director relationship?
Um, I, in the beginning, I feel like I appreciate someone who gives me a lot of freedom and isn't going to do too much. I find it really helpful though, um, what I like about a director, someone who can actually just help me understand the scene a little bit more about what, what it's about. It takes— sometimes it takes me a minute to really get exactly what needs to happen in the scene, um, in the overall arc of the story. So if someone can help talk with me and communicate about that and then kind of give me the freedom to kind of explore a character, I love that. I really appreciate a good director, just directors, because I feel like it just only fine-tunes what I do better. I feel like I'm a better actor when a director can kind of talk to me about the script and we can have a discussion about what the scene sort of needs to be and 'Cause I'm not always great at figuring out the overall arc of the story and how my character might fit in on what we're trying to tell. So I find that very helpful to have a director who's gonna help me with that. But yeah, I definitely appreciate freedom to kind of just throw anything out there and know that I might make a choice that is a terrible choice, but I needed to just try it. Over with and we won't do that one again.
Which boils down to trust. Yeah. You want somebody that you can trust and that trusts you too.
Yeah, because I also, you know, like if I'm doing something that I think is like hilarious or great and it's not, you know, I'm gonna hopefully someone's with who's watching the whole piece is going to be like, okay, look, we need to tweak this, you know.
That was really good, but now can you try it?
Yeah, yeah, this way. I always find a good director too, um, is really good at directing you without making it feel like he's telling you what to So it actually feels like, even though you're getting the result the director wants, it kind of feels like you're kind of doing it and bringing it to the table too, you know? So.
