How to Carve Better In One Run (2 Simple Tips)

In this instructional video, Tom Gellie teaches skiers two straightforward hand‑position cues that dramatically improve carving performance in a single run. The first cue is to keep the palms facing down toward the snow, which promotes better balance and a sense of a safety net. The second cue is to maintain the outside hand at a consistent height—or even lower it—through the turn, preventing the hand from rising and allowing stronger outside‑ski pressure and ski bite. Tom demonstrates these cues with two skiers, Matt and Jackson, showing before‑and‑after footage that highlights smoother, more stable turns and increased confidence. The participants report feeling more stable, less forced, and able to ski with a simpler, more relaxed feel. Tom explains his broader teaching philosophy: breaking skiing down into isolated skill pieces (hand cues, ankle control, etc.) and practicing each until they become an automatic feeling, which then integrates into a fluid, big‑picture skiing style. He encourages viewers to practice slowly at first, monitor hand position, and progressively increase turn count and consistency, linking the approach to his Big Picture Skiing platform.
