The foot as a three legged table - and how to apply this to your skiing.

In this instructional video, Tom Gellie uses a model foot to explain how the anatomy and biomechanics of the human foot influence skiing performance. He highlights that the tibia is the primary load‑bearing bone, and the heel bone (calcaneus) sits off‑center relative to the tibia, causing the foot to naturally pronate under load. Gellie adopts Gary Ward’s “three‑legged picnic table” analogy: the foot has three functional supports (tibia, talus, and the outer rear heel) with a missing support under the medial arch, which explains why orthotics often target that area. He describes how shifting weight backward and toward the outside of the heel prevents pronation, while moving weight forward and inward encourages the foot to roll, directing pressure to the ski’s inside edge for turn initiation. Gellie argues that awareness and targeted exercises can train the foot to bear weight through the rear‑outside heel, reshaping the arch and improving edge control. He credits Gary Ward’s Anatomy in Motion for the conceptual framework and suggests that applying this foot‑mechanics model can help skiers initiate turns and maintain better carving pressure.
