I do a lot of testing in bare feet in just the shell alone, and I do this because I want a really snug fit where every single crevice and bony part of my foot is accommodated for. I feel if my foot can be snug but sit naturally on the boot, I can ski my best. So this is what I do: punch, grind, and then do my own kind of made-up tests, again with no liner inside. To see if I can fit these boots perfectly to my anatomy. The liner can hide a lot, so taking that out of the equation helps you create a very refined and snug fit. Having your own tools and getting to know them well really helps too.
