My name is Tom and I am one of the authors for this book that you are about to go to. And I have to admit something. To start off, I was not the best student in high school. In fact, after graduating high school with a stellar C grade point average, I was actually rejected from almost every decent school that I applied to that actually ended up enrolling at a college that was closer to my childhood home than my high was. I knew that they would accept me, which is why I enrolled. I couldn't help but feel a sense of failure for not having gone to a brand name school. Like most first year students, I also had a feeling of excitement. I was scared. I was nervous about entering into this new chapter in my life despite a lot of uncertainty. The only thing I did know was that college wasn't going to be like anything I had experienced before. And I was right. My college had 34,000 students, which is a massive school, which made it feel big. But most of those students were commuters which then made it feel small. The school devoted a massive amount of resources into helping me and others transition smoothly from high school to college. Yet after 90 days of hand holding from the institution, I still had this backpack full of unanswered questions on how to succeed at this thing called college. There was no rule book for me to follow. There was no 12 easy steps to Mastering college. It was only through trial and error in my own experience and learning from others that I was eventually able to navigate higher education for the next three and a half years. I brought up my standing from C student to straight A student. I even won a National Academic Award that's given to only 20 students around the country. I graduated top of my class and got to give the commencement speech at graduation. It wasn't easy though. But by figuring out some insider tips to college, I was able to excel. And since graduating, I have worked with hundreds of thousands of students all over the world. And a common phrase I hear if only someone would have told me fill in the blank when I started college. The book that you are about to go through is a combination of super secret insider tips to college that either we, the authors, learn, learned ourselves or were suggested to us from experts within our community. This is the rule book we wish we had when we were in your shoes. From classroom seating tips to self care techniques to scoring the perfect campus job, this book is going to be your insider's guide to college success that might not be covered at orientation. You'll notice that the size, the layout and the interactive sections of this book are all designed to make it your ultimate college field guide that you could take with you on your phone, in your tablet, or even if you get the print copy, you can have it in your backpack, read straight through or thumb to a specific topic that's most relevant to you to right now. College could be one of the most exciting times of your life, and with this field guide in your hand, you're already well on your way to going from first year student to first year success. My name is Tom and I'm excited for you to dig into this book.
