Tom Krieglstein describes four ways to trigger endorphins at events: laughter, touch, music, and physical movement. A 20-minute group laughter exercise left participants energized and connected. Doing these together multiplies the effect, creating what he calls a social magic potion that boosts joy and connection.

I was standing there in a room with 15 other people and my mom, and we had one goal for the next 20 minutes, and that goal was to not say anything else except to laugh. And boy, did we laugh. We let out a barrel laugh. We let out the he, he, he, he, and we let out the full blown ha, ha, ha type of laugh for 20 minutes. I left that meeting so energized, so connected, so filled and joyful, that it made me do some research as to why these 20 minutes of laughter were so powerful. And what I discovered, it's not about the laughter. It's actually the instructor was taking advantage of four techniques to unleash the happy drug inside our body. That happy drug is called endorphins. And those endorphins get released when we are physically or mentally stressed as a way to overcome those. Many times, those endorphins give us the same feeling as opioids, minus the negative side effects. So the trick is, how do you release it in a positive, constructive way? Well, the instructor found out the four techniques, and they are laughter, touch, music, and physical movement. Those four techniques are a way to trick our brains into releasing endorphins so we get that positive rush. But this instructor actually took it one step further. They were using one additional technique to supercharge the results from those four other items. And this instructor used a technique that was talked about in research in the book Thinking Big. And in that book, the researchers found that when we do these four techniques with other people versus by ourselves, it exponentially grows the results, meaning we have even more of an endorphin rush. And it makes sense. We're social beings, so when we're socially connected doing these four things, it's gonna be like a multiplier of the endorphins. It's as if it's like a magic potion when you sprinkle it in with other people. So next time you're hosting an event, think about how you're incorporating these four techniques, plus how you can do it with other people and watch your whole community have an overwhelming rush of endorphins that's attached to your brand and your community. My name is Tom. I'm here to help you to engage your people. I'll see you in the next video.
