Tom Krieglstein teaches a four-step system for remembering names: consciously process the name when you hear it, use it once or twice in conversation, create a vivid visual link to something familiar, and write it down afterward with a few details.

How many times have you ever introduced yourself to someone and then you hear their name back? And then 20 or 10 or five seconds later, you're like, what was their name again? Well, in this video, I'm gonna tell you one little tactic that I use to help me to remember people's names as much as possible. With that, let's get into. It happens all the time. We're there in the conversation. We're just getting going. Hi, my name's Tom. Nice to meet you. What's your name? And they say their name, and just as it comes in to the ear, it goes out to never be remembered again. So here are my strategies to help you and help me to remember people's names. Number one, we have to consciously and actively take the effort to remember the name that's coming in. Meaning when they say their name, we don't just let it disappear into the ether. We take a moment to process it by saying something like, oh, that's a cool name, or where did you get that name Samantha from? And then let them respond. Take a moment to actually talk with them about their name. If it's a unique name that has a unique spelling, if it's said in a unique way, or if you have a connection to that name. Oh, my brother is also named Dan. That's cool. So we have that connection. Those little moments right there will wake our brain up so that we. We don't just let that information flow through us without getting processed at all. So tip number one, take a moment to remember their name. Tip number two, repeat using their name in the conversation. Don't just start with their name and never say it again. Use it once or twice. Okay? Don't use it in every moment of conversation because it does get a little bit awkward. Aaron, it's so great to meet you. Aaron. I hope we see each other again. Aaron, you are the best. Aaron, what a great story. It gets awkward. Don't do it. So instead, once or twice, maybe three times throughout the conversation, use their name again, because that's going to help keep it in your brain and keep your brain processing it. So that's tip number two. Use the name again in the conversation. Tip number three, Remember by association, I told you earlier that sometimes I'll say verbally, oh, my brother's also named Dan. Can you attach their name to something else? A famous person that has the same name, Someone in your life that has the same name? Does their name sound like something? Find some sort of association that their name can have and then think about that in our brain as we hear the name so that it helps us to remember it. So we go, what was that person's name again? And then we'll visualize what that association is, because our brain likes to think in picture, color, and action. So as soon as I make a connection, I go, oh, my brother Dan also has that same name. So now I quickly, in my mind, make a visual connection between this person and my brother Dan. Chatting, having a good time, or doing something together, And I'll lock it in. So then I'll help my brain just a little bit more to remember that information, to retain it. Last and final tip, tip number four is to follow up with using their names. After the conversation is done, can you go back to a notebook? Do you have some sort of, like, CRM? Do you have a phone that you can record notes on something so you can lock it in who it was? And a few quick tidbits about them that follow up afterwards will really help to retain that name inside our brain? Oh, I like that. It rhymes. Retain the name inside the brain. Okay, I'm not a rapper. Not gonna try and go there. But I hope that these four tips help you to remember the names of the people that you connect with, because names have such powerful value. And if you can remember the names of the people in your team, your organization, your community, you're gonna watch the engagement go up because you have a stronger relationship with that person. My name's Thom. I'm here to help you to engage the people on your dance floor. I'll see you in the next video. Video.
