Tom Krieglstein shares three tips for keynotes in large college auditoriums. Sound echoes, so speak slowly and pause often. Audience members far away lose intimacy with the speaker, requiring different engagement tactics. Group activities take longer than expected, so build in extra buffer time.
Hey, this is Tom here with speaker tip number 613. And if you end up at some point speaking at the college level, there is a strong possibility that you may end up speaking in a space that looks like this with thousands of chairs. This is my setup for my keynote for the orientation for the first year students. And so really quickly, three things you need to know if speaking in a space like this. Number one, the sound is going to echo all over the place. So speak slowly, speak clearly, and give it a moment for the sound to travel. Number two, it is much harder to have intimacy because you're going to have people way up there that won't even see your face. And number three, activities will take much longer because there's so many people. So buffer time for the large group activities.
