Tom Krieglstein explores three regional celebrations: Oatman, Arizona's Ghost Rider fires blanks twice daily to honor cowboy history; Vila Nova, Portugal hosts a mushroom festival for local crops; Cambodia's Mekong Dolphin Festival celebrates river dolphins. Each town turned what made it distinctive into a living tradition.
Did you know in Oatman, Arizona, they have a tradition called the Oatman Ghost Rider, where two times per day, someone gets on a horse, shoots blanks into the air every single day throughout the entire year as a celebration to their cowboy outlaw history? Or did you know that in Villa Nova, Portugal, they actually host a festival called the Fiera do Congomelo Mushroom Festival that celebrates the mushrooms grown in the area? Or one in Koopodo, Cambodia, they have a Mekong Dolphin festival that celebrates the dolphins that live in the area. What I love about all these festivals and all these traditions is that they are so specific to that region, that area of the world. So if you have a community, think about what makes you special, what makes you unique, and turn that into a celebration or into a tradition.
