In this short video, Tom Krieglstein explains that the human brain, despite weighing only about 1/50 of total body mass, consumes roughly one‑fifth of the body's energy. Because the brain is a high‑energy organ, it constantly seeks answers; once it finds an answer, it reduces its activity and attention wanes. Krieglstein proposes a simple hack: deliberately challenge or question information—even when you think you know the answer—to prevent the brain from “shutting down” and to keep it alert and engaged for longer periods of learning or listening.
