In this episode, host Priya (Preet) interviews David Hope, a veteran APAC senior vice‑president in the tech industry, about his six‑month sabbatical that combined physical activity, deep learning, and personal growth. The conversation begins with David’s early life as an expat, his extensive career at companies such as IBM, ForgeRock, and others, and the decision to pause his professional trajectory after ForgeRock’s acquisition. David and his wife Alex designed the sabbatical around a three‑part theme – Living, Learning, and Doing – and set out on a globe‑spanning itinerary. The first leg took them to Nepal, where David spent three nights in Yonggor Rinpoche’s monastery, met the “happiest man in the world” (the Buddhist teacher Yonggor Rinpoche), took a helicopter to Everest Base Camp, and trekked solo back to Lukla, reflecting on mindfulness, authentic leadership, and the importance of mental fitness. Serendipitous encounters with YouTube co‑founder Steve Chen and IFS founder Manny Swenson highlighted the unexpected networking value of travel. The second experience was a 260 km walk along the Camino de Santiago, during which David and Alex stayed in varied historic accommodations, met travelers from around the world, and drew personal insights about partnership and the value of time. The third experience comprised a series of culturally rich excursions across Europe – Gallipoli, the Alps, the Roman ruins of Ephesus, the underground city of Cappadocia, a Minoan island near Crete, and historic sites in Italy, Slovenia, Turkey, and England – each reinforcing the theme of continuous learning through history and place. Throughout, David emphasizes mindfulness as a daily habit, likening meditation to brushing teeth, and shares practical advice for integrating brief, regular practice to manage corporate stress and anxiety. He also references the book “Four Thousand Weeks” to frame the finite nature of life and argues that a sabbatical, when taken deliberately, returns a leader to work smarter, stronger, and more authentic. The episode concludes with a call for listeners to consider a sabbatical as an investment in personal and professional growth.
