This is a short YouTube talk (by Tracy Hazzard) explaining what podcast listening apps are, where they run (mobile, web, desktop), and their main user-facing features: search/browse, subscribing, automatic downloads/notifications, ratings/reviews, and saved libraries for later listening. The speaker lists common apps (Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Pocket Cast, PodCruncher, SiriusXM, GoodPods) as examples.
You.
What is a listening app? Well, a podcast listening app is an individual little program or app that is usually on your mobile phone device. I'm going to show you here. I have an iPhone and I have, you know, a little sort of folder with many different listening apps in it. Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Pocket Cast, PodCruncher, SiriusXM, there are others one like Good Pods and you know, all sorts of different apps that listeners can choose to use to listen to podcasts. So on a smartphone that that's the primary way that people listen is through a listening app. And when you go into that app, you can search on all the different podcast shows that are there. You can browse through the categories, pick one and start to play it and listen to it, use it with a headset, or you could listen to it over the speakerphone, a speaker of your phone if you want. There are also web apps for listening to podcasts. So if you, for whatever reason don't have a smartphone or don't want to use one, you can go through your web browser and go to Apple Podcasts, Spotify. All the listening apps have a web app version that you can listen to through a browser, and some of them have a desktop app. If you have a just a laptop computer or a desktop computer and you'd prefer to listen that way, most of them have a listening app that you can download to your operating system of your computer and, and search the same way you would on a mobile phone and listen to podcasts that way. So the advantage of a listening app is you can subscribe to a show and then every time there's an episode that publishes, when you're subscribed, it automatically downloads it to your device, saves it for you, and lets you know, hey, you have a new episode that you can listen to. And you can also leave ratings or reviews for shows that you like or don't like, I guess. And there are some other interesting features. Saving libraries of content of episodes that you like and saving them for listening to at a later date. So podcast listening app is really just a tool, an app.
A means to you searching through all the different podcasts that are out there, finding the ones you'd like to listen to and then listening to them.
