This is a YouTube video titled "Does WebRTC support unencrypted media transmission?" containing a technical discussion from December 13, 2024, about the necessity of encryption in WebRTC, with one speaker questioning the need for encryption in internal networks and the other explaining the enforced encryption standards.
Does WebRTC support unencrypted media transmission?
It does not. We are forcing SRTP encryption on you by default and there's no way to turn it off.
Okay.
I mean, it's 2024. You should be encrypting everything that goes out over the network. We've seen that in the past. For example, nobody uses HTTP anymore. Everyone uses HTTPs. Everything is encrypted in transit. Deal with it.
Okay, but I'm using my browsers running within my internal network and they're connected directly and I don't need to. And the other side is using surveillance camera or SIP or whatever. And RTP there is unencrypted. So why should I encrypt here?
Well, because we force you to. You need a gateway. If you want to support that, then you are free to do whatever you want there. Including not using encryption but in the browser.
Yep. I think that will also, in a way, force the signaling to be encrypted.
Well, because we are forcing HTTPs for getusermedia, so, yes, signaling is encrypted.
