Short dialog discussing whether WebRTC can scale for group calls and broadcasting. Speakers note full-mesh peer-to-peer WebRTC does not scale for multi-party calls, but using an SFU (server to redistribute video) allows much larger audiences; overall scalability depends on application architecture and server/infrastructure choices.
How scalable is WebRTC for group calls and broadcasting?
Well, we used to say WebTC is for peer to peer and you hear a lot of fear about that one. It's like WebTC does not scale. And yes.
That'S.
Totally true if you're talking about the full mesh approach, which is something that we tried back in 2011, 2012 in the early days of WebPC and it turned out it does not work. And that's what most people do for group calls these days. If you use an sfu a server to redistribute the video, it can scale to pretty large audiences. I mean Google Meet as flagship application I think has a limit of thousand and beyond that it's like, is it still a web risky call? Does the real time ness make sense?
So I guess it's not that WebRTC doesn't scale, is that your application doesn't scale, it just depends on.
What application or your server.
Yeah. So it's based on what architecture and what servers and what infrastructure you put in place for your problem, what you're trying to solve. And WebRTC can solve group calling and broadcast just like other technologies that you just need to know how to actually use it.
