A short YouTube discussion (by Tsahi Levent-Levi) comparing when to prefer G.711 over Opus. Speakers note that G.711 can be cheaper in call-center/PSTN gateway deployments because it avoids cloud/server transcoding when many concurrent calls occur, but it offers lower voice quality and is less robust to packet loss compared with Opus.

When will you prefer to use G711 over Opus?
That is very aware if you're talking about pure C use cases, but if you're talking about use cases that Involve Gateway to PSTN, then you might want to prefer HC711. It is generally cheaper to mix, decode and everything. The downside is that it doesn't deal well with packet loss and it's like the voice quality is just not as good.
Yep. What happens is, especially in call centers, you've got on one hand the PSTN or pure telephony and on the other end there is an agent sitting in a browser and receives the call in WebRTC. Now the one that dials in uses G7.11 or even worse codecs somewhere in there and then the decision by the call center would be to use G7.11 or Opus. When G7.11 use, the quality is the same as long as we've got a good network, but it gets worse as the network worsens because G7.11 isn't as reliable or robust as Opus. Now the upside of using G7.11 is if you've got lots and lots and calls happening concurrently, you don't need to pay for transcoding in the cloud for them or in the server for them. So that's why you will see Call center still using G711 today. Although I guess we both agree that it would be better to go and put the effort on using Opus there.
Yes, but if the quality is Limited by G711 on the PST and like it's like nothing you can do.
