Be suspicious of stories | Tyler Cowen | TEDxMidAtlantic

In this TEDx talk, economist Tyler Cowen argues that humans are wired to gravitate toward simple, archetypal stories, which act as cognitive filters that strip away mess and complexity. He notes that most narratives fall into a handful of classic types (monster, rags‑to‑riches, quest, etc.) and that people routinely recast their own lives in story form, preferring tidy journeys over the underlying mess. Cowen explains how this storytelling impulse leads to several systematic errors: oversimplification, a default good‑vs‑evil framing, a fascination with conspiratorial intent, and the “get tough” narrative that substitutes moral certainty for nuanced analysis. He shows how personal stories can become self‑deceptive tools that keep us stuck in unproductive habits, and how marketers and other actors exploit our love of stories to steer consumption. Rather than trying to eliminate stories, Cowen urges epistemic humility—accepting messiness, questioning seductive narratives, and seeking the stories no one has an incentive to tell. He offers practical heuristics (e.g., press a mental button when a good‑vs‑evil story arises) and encourages a mindset of “hovering” over certainty, embracing agnosticism in some domains while remaining vigilant about the hidden biases stories introduce.
