Can America make a comeback? | Tyler Cowen

In this monologue, economist Tyler Cowen traces the arc of American material progress, noting that major breakthroughs—from fire to the printing press, then the fusion of fossil fuels with machines in the 19th century—spurred rapid growth, especially in the early‑to‑mid 20th century when living standards rose 3‑4% annually, making the United States the world’s richest nation. He argues that around 1973 the pace of progress stalled due to a combination of factors: the low‑hanging fruit of electrification had been harvested, increased regulation (sometimes justified, sometimes not), higher energy prices, and a cultural shift toward risk‑aversion that he previously described in his book The Complacent Class. Cowen highlights growing political and geographic sorting, rising racial segregation, and a “human‑capital crisis” amplified by the pandemic’s school closures and social isolation, which have left vulnerable populations worse off. He points to the rapid development of a COVID‑19 vaccine as evidence that true urgency can mobilize heroic effort, and he sees current advances in computing, the internet, and biomedicine as potential catalysts for renewed growth. However, he warns that progress will only resume if Americans stop taking prosperity for granted, adopt the urgency‑driven mindset common among immigrants, and collectively recognize and act on the emergency of the moment.
