After losing a spouse, you need to set up financial and healthcare powers of attorney with backup agents, review your will or trust to make sure it still fits your life, and update beneficiary names on insurance, 401(k)s, and IRAs.

If you're in a relationship and your partner dies, the law often refers to the person still living as the surviving spouse. If that's you, here are 3 things you must do immediately. Here's the first thing: check your financial power of attorney and your healthcare power of attorney. Make sure there is someone listed as a backup to your deceased partner. Now that you're single, it is critical that you make sure that someone is there to act on your behalf if you can't do so. If you don't have these powers of attorney, get them immediately. The next thing is, if you have a will or a trust, review them to make sure that the plan you had when you were married with your partner is still the plan you want. And lastly, check all of your beneficiary designations on insurance policies, 401s, IRAs. Now that your partner's deceased, you need to make sure there's someone else listed as your beneficiary. Obviously, you need time to grieve, but after that, make sure you follow up on all these things. Follow me for more info like this.
