Three ways your will looks dumb: putting cremation instructions in it, naming someone as an IRA beneficiary in your will when the account's own designation overrides it, and including life-support decisions that belong in a living will instead.

I'm just going to lay it out there for what it's worth. You can take it or leave it, but you're going to come off looking like a huge dork if you put these things in your will. I mean, you're going to be looking down on everything and saying to yourself, Jerry was right. I should have done what he said. Okay, first thing, and this is a good one. Let's say you die and your family held a nice burial service for you. And then a week later, when everybody gets around to reading your will, they find out that you wanted to be cremated. What do you want everybody to pull out the shovels again? Okay, next, don't leave your entire IRA to to two different people. Let's say your IRA is the biggest asset you've got. When you leave it in your will to Floyd, but 40 years ago when you set it up, you named Woody as your beneficiary. Well, I don't care who Floyd is, he ain't getting that IRA. Woody is. Okay, next. If you don't want to be kept alive on a machine and you want them to pull the plug, don't put that in your will. Put that in your living will. So there you have it. Three good ways to not come off looking like a dork in your will. For some of you, there's no hope, but for the rest of you, there's still time. Remember, you heard it here first.
