Banks may freeze joint accounts when one owner dies, sometimes the whole account and sometimes just the deceased's share. Policies vary by bank and don't always match the law. Call your bank now to find out what happens to yours.

If you have a joint bank account with another person, that account could be frozen when one of you dies. I have seen a bank freeze the entire account when one of the joint owners dies, and I've also seen a bank freeze half of the account when one of the owners dies. Bank procedures do not necessarily follow what the law says in this area. The bank wants to make sure they're not liable for giving the money to the wrong person. The lesson here is check with your bank, then go to my Linktree to work with me and to get my newsletter.
