Jerry Taylor advises parents to remove their name from a child's vehicle title once they turn 18. Being on the title means you could be sued if your child causes an accident, even though it will raise their insurance premiums.

Get your name off the title of your children's vehicles. In most states, if your child is over the age of 18, you need to take your name off the title and put theirs on it. Yes, the insurance may be more expensive doing it that way, but if your child has an accident and they get sued, I guarantee you will be named a defendant in that lawsuit if your name is on the title, and you will wish you had listened to this advice. The possibility of having a large judgment entered against you personally outweighs the additional cost of insurance.
